Search Tips for The Rochester Advocate

(return to the search page)

  • Keep it simple. Start with one keyword. If you receive too many results, add another keyword.
  • The books were scanned with optical character recognition (OCR) which has a degree of accuracy, but mistakes do occur - especially with unusual typefaces or letterspacing. Try alternate spellings of the keyword or name you seek.
  • If searching for a person, consider alternate names. For example, you may have known your ancestor as Samuel. Samuel may have gone by "Sam" or "Sammy" if he was a young student at the school.
  • Consider maiden and married names.
  • Try your search with and without middle names and middle initial (James William Smith, James W. Smith, James Smith).
