 About RSD

Hearing Aid Services

RSD audiologists regularly monitor students' hearing aids to ensure the equipment performs at optimum levels. Comprehensive hearing aid trials with digital hearing aids are routinely offered to provide the opportunity for students to use more advanced technology. RSD has the capability of dispensing hearing aids to students.

Medical Services

RSD medical care is supervised by an attending physician and includes 24-hour nursing care. The nurses are available for a variety of services including the distribution of medications.

Student Study Team

Students experiencing learning problems can benefit from a Student Study Team, convened to discuss the issue and suggest remedies. Parents are involved in the process and kept informed of the progress.

Learning Disabilities Support Team

The Learning Disabilities Support Team is comprised of a psychologist, an educational evaluator, the director of curriculum, an audiologist, the director of speech/communication and audiology, and an occupational therapist. The group gathers information about the student's situation from the teacher and others, and formulates strategies to help the student succeed. Teachers who implement these strategies in the classroom often report dramatic progress.

Counseling

RSD offers a variety of student counseling services, including one-on-one services and "Skills-Streaming" within the classroom. In Skills-Streaming, a counseling team visits a classroom to teach particular social skills or to remedy a specific behavioral problem.

Mental Health Team

A Mental Health Team at RSD meets weekly and is composed of experts who carefully observe students who are having emotional issues or exhibiting behavioral problems. The team supports the student for as long as needed.

Behavioral Intervention

When a student's behavior interferes with his or her learning, RSD develops a remedial plan compliant with New York State requirements. The school's behavior management specialist and school psychologist work with the staff to conduct a Functional Behavioral Analysis and implement a Behavior Intervention Plan.
