Visitors from Japan Tour RSD 02/11/09
A group of Japanese professors, sign language interpreters, pharmacists and medical students visiting the Rochester area this week made a stop at Rochester School for the Deaf on Wednesday February 11, 2009. The group was hosted by RSD Medical Director Dr. Carolyn Stern, who is deaf. Dr. Stern guided the visitors from Japan through the infirmary at RSD, the Learning Resource Center and Denton Hall, where RSD's Early Childhood Center is located. Mr. Paul Holmes, Director of RSD Services for Children, and his staff met with the group from Japan also. Sent by the Japanese Federation of the Deaf, the group is investigating Rochester as a model on how to train deaf doctors and medical workers, said Alan Spanjer, husband of Dr. Stern. They co-head http://www.deafdoc.org/, a Brighton, NY organization hosting the visitors from Japan. DeafDOC.org holds workshops for health care providers and trains sign language interpreters to work with doctors and hospitals.
