Rochester School for the Deaf to Welcome New Superintendent/CEO

Mr. Antony A.L. McLetchie to Lead RSD as Dr. Harold Mowl Retires

ROCHESTER, NY: Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD) will welcome its 7th Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Antony A.L. McLetchie, on April 13. A public welcome ceremony is planned for that day starting at 1:30 p.m. in the school auditorium, located at 1545 St. Paul Street, in Rochester.

The RSD Board of Directors unanimously approved McLetchie, 45, as the new leader of the school last August following a nationwide search process. He takes over for retiring Superintendent/CEO Dr. Harold Mowl, 67, who led RSD since 1990. To ensure a smooth transition, Mowl, a resident of Pittsford, will remain in an advisory role at the school until June 30.

Canadian-born McLetchie, who is deaf, currently works as principal at Ernest C. Drury Secondary School for the Deaf in Milton, Ontario and Robarts School for the Deaf in London, Ontario, Canada. He holds a bachelor’s degree in History and Deaf Studies from Gallaudet University and a master’s degree in Deaf Education from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College). He also worked as a Teacher of the Deaf and school administrator in Washington, DC, and Scranton, Pennsylvania. McLetchie is married to Susan Demers-McLetchie. Their daughter is 3 years-old and each have teenage children from previous marriages.

“It is exciting to have an educator of Mr. McLetchie’s caliber join our team,” said RSD Board of Directors President Dr. Michael Doughty. “He is passionate about deaf and hard-of-hearing children and young adults and their education, and he brings to Rochester a wealth of experience in building a strong school culture, a well-supported teaching staff and an effective curriculum.”

Doughty will be Master of Ceremonies at the April 13 welcome ceremony. Also present to deliver remarks will be: Christopher Campbell, president of the RSD Parent-Staff Association; RSD Alumni Association President LeeAnne Valentine; and, High School junior Brianna Di Giovanni, president of the Junior National Association of the Deaf RSD Chapter.

“First, we must give heartfelt thanks to Dr. Mowl for his years of dedication and commitment to RSD,” Brianna Di Giovanni said. “We are indeed fortunate to have him as our leader. His will be very large shoes for Mr. McLetchie to fill, and we are confident he can.”

About McLetchie, Mowl said: “I am honored actually that Tony is stepping up and into the Superintendent/CEO position at RSD. He has worked hard over the last 22 years as a Teacher of the Deaf and school administrator. He’s aptly qualified to lead this great school.”
