EHDI Act Reauthorization: RSD Responds
RSD Supt. McLetchie’s Letter to U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand

March 30, 2016: In his letter to U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (Democrat - New York), Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD) Superintendent and CEO Antony McLetchie joined with the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and Deaf education leaders at Schools for the Deaf across America concerning the reauthorization of Senate Bill 2424, the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act (EHDI). Senator Gillibrand is a co-sponsor of the EHDI reauthorization bill.

EHDI focuses on mandatory newborn hearing screening in hospitals and provision of early intervention services to babies who are identified as deaf or hard of hearing and their families. The NAD is recommending amendments to the Act, urging a shift in focus on how the law is enforced and requesting changing the name of the law to the Family Support Act.
