Rochester School for the Deaf Set to Host its First-Ever ESDAA Division One Girls Basketball Tournament
RSD Girls to Defend their ESDAA D-1 Basketball Crown against Five Schools for the Deaf

ROCHESTER, NY – Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD) will host its first-ever Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association (ESDAA) Division One Girls’ Basketball Tournament, February 5-7, 2016, at the school, 1545 St. Paul Street. Sixth through 3rd place games and the tournament championship game will be held Sunday, February 7th at Eastridge High School, 2350 East Ridge Road.

The RSD girls’ varsity basketball team are the current ESDAA Division One and Two champions, having secured both top honors last school year in divisional tournament contests.

No. 1 seed Rochester tips off the tournament on their home court Friday February 5th at 3:30 p.m. vs. the tournament Bye team. Play resumes at 6:30 p.m. with 4th seed Lexington School for the Deaf of New York City vs. 5th seed American School for the Deaf of Hartford, Connecticut. At 8:00 p.m. 3rd seed Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf of Pittsburgh faces 6th seed Marie Philip School from The Learning Center in Framingham, Mass. Second seed Delaware School for the Deaf plays Saturday.

Play resumes through Saturday February 6th at RSD. Individual and team competitions run from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday afternoon games are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. No. 2 seed Delaware School for the Deaf faces the winner of game three at 6:15 p.m. and Rochester faces the winner game two at 8:00 p.m.

The tournament shifts to Eastridge High School on Sunday February 7th. Tournament 5th and 6th place teams square off at 9:30 a.m., and the 3rd and 4th place teams face each other at 11:00 a.m. The championship game tips off at 12:30 p.m. with tournament awards immediately following.

Daily tournament passes are $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students, 12- to 18-years old. Children 11-years old and younger are free. Full tournament passes are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. Purchase passes at the door.

The ESDAA was the first of currently five athletic associations for the Deaf organized in the United States.

In 2016 Rochester School for the Deaf, founded in 1876, celebrates its 140th year of continuous service. The school provides educational programs to families in New York State with deaf and hard of hearing children and young adults, newborn to age 21, as well as outreach services to the community at-large.
