Wildcat Athletics
For generations, Rochester School for the Deaf athletics has been a source of school pride, community spirit, leadership, and lifelong friendships. Our student-athletes compete with determination, sportsmanship, and heart — representing RSD both locally and across the country while building skills that extend far beyond the playing field.
As proud Wildcats, RSD students compete in local interscholastic athletics, while also traveling to regional and national competitions with other Deaf schools through the Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association (ESDAA) and the National Deaf Interscholastic Athletic Association (NDIAA). RSD maintains a Friend and Neighbor status within Section Five of NYSPHSAA. This means that we comply with their rules and regulations.

ESDAA Membership and Competition
RSD is a proud member of the Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association (ESDAA), a long-standing athletic conference made up of Deaf schools from across the eastern United States. ESDAA competition gives students the opportunity to travel, compete, and connect with Deaf peers while participating in high-level athletic tournaments and championship events.

These competitions are an important part of Deaf school culture and tradition, fostering lifelong friendships, leadership skills, and a strong sense of community.
A Tradition of Sportsmanship and Excellence
RSD Athletics has a long history of competitive success and outstanding sportsmanship. Our coaches and student-athletes proudly uphold the values of the NYSPHSAA Sportsmanship Pledge and represent RSD with integrity on and off the court and field.
Whether competing at home in Rochester or traveling to Deaf school tournaments throughout the region, our teams are known for their determination, resilience, teamwork, and respect for opponents and officials alike.
Athletics also play an important role in strengthening ties within the broader Deaf community. Traveling to ESDAA tournaments and events gives students opportunities to meet Deaf peers from other schools, build friendships, and celebrate Deaf culture through competition and shared experiences.
Student-Athlete Support and Safety
RSD is committed to creating a safe, supportive, and developmentally appropriate athletic environment for all students. Student-athletes receive guidance from experienced coaches and staff who emphasize academics, teamwork, wellness, and personal growth.
Our athletic department follows NYSPHSAA guidelines and maintains comprehensive health and safety protocols, including:
- Sports physical requirements
- Concussion management protocols
- Sudden cardiac arrest prevention procedures
- Academic eligibility expectations
- Clear sportsmanship and behavioral standards
